A new ray of hope for the visually impaired at Goa!

Healthway Super Specialty Hospitals, Goa added one more glorious feather to it’s cap with the accreditation of the institution as a ‘Certified Cornea Transplant Centre’. Healthway hospitals is the first private sector Corneal transplant center in the state of Goa. The transplant surgery was conducted on the right eye of a 34 years old female suffering from the congenital Macular Dystrophy. It is noteworthy to mention here that a large number of people in the country suffer from partial or total vision impairment on account of various ophthalmic conditions that fall under the broad category of ‘Corneal blindness’. ‘Corneal transplant’ or ‘Keratoplasty’ in ophthalmic terminology is the process of partly or totally replacing the effected cornea with a new donor cornea and reviving vision.
It was a proud moment for Healthway Super specialty Hospital and its ophthalmology department when the ‘Directorate of Health Services’ Ministry of Health, Goa declared the institution as a ‘Certified Cornea Transplant Center’. The accreditation was awarded after Senior ophthalmologists and government officials conducted a month long audit and ensured that the ophthalmology department has the necessary infrastructure like prescribed storage space for the donor cornea, surgical equipment, qualified and experienced Cornea specialists who have the knowledge to ascertain the kind of corneal transplant needed for different patients and have the expertise to carry out the same.
The certification and accreditation to perform ‘Corneal transplants’ is a recognition of the hospitals constant endeavor towards enhancing its facilities, capabilities and services to the community it serves and comes as a vital resource to those visually impaired owing to issues pertaining to the Cornea living in Goa and the nearby region.
